Intro to Acting

Intro to Acting covers basic principles of acting, important acting vocabulary, as well as stage movement and blocking, so that students are prepared to enter a community or professional theatre space and efficiently take direction. Through a variety of exercises designed to develop listening, emotional response and imagination skills, students will become more confident, relaxed, and creative using the Actor’s Instrument - their own voices and bodies. This class will also utilize monologues and contentless scenes to further challenge students to consider point-of-view, given circumstances, and character biography as part of their preparation for a role.

Class times differ based on age of students:

  • Ages 14-18 | 6:15pm - 7:45pm

  • Ages 7-13 | 4:30pm - 6:00pm

Instructor: Lyeneal Griffin

Improv

Improvisation is one of the most powerful tools an actor can learn to deepen self-confidence, public speaking skills, and the ability to “roll with the punches” in any sphere of performance. Learn story structure, comedy, listening, assertiveness, and the ability to give-and-take — all skills applicable to any other performance art, as well as to real life. For those who may say theatre isn’t practical, improv training begs to differ!

In this class, students will learn how to build a firm foundation for every improv scene, as well as create an improv character through an observation exercise. Students will learn and be quizzed on basic concepts of improv such as “Yes, and—“, status, and how to build a firm foundation. Improv is best learned by DOING; therefore students will be on their feet much of each class applying these concepts to games and exercises with side-coaching from the instructor. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes you can move in (no flip-flops or skirts/dresses)…because you never know WHAT’S going to happen! Class will culminate in students performing a 20-30 minute improv show for their family and peers.
