SPRING BREAK FILM CAMP 2023

DAILY GUIDELINES

Camp Basics:

  • Spring Branch Community Church (1500 N Great Neck Rd, Virginia Beach)

  • 8:00am - 4:00pm

  • Monday, April 10 - Friday, April 14

  • Due to the nature of filmmaking, perfect attendance is required from all campers

  • Movie Screening for Friends & Family, Tuesday, April 21: 6:00-8:00pm. (Free Admission)

Drop-off and Pick-Up at Spring Branch:

  • When you pull into the parking lot, you will see the large cross and main entry doors to the church. Instead of parking, please turn right and drive all the way around the building to the covered portico entrance. Exit straight out toward N Great Neck Rd. Please limit speed to 10 mph in parking lot.

  • Check-in begins at 7:50am. If you arrive earlier, please wait with your student until you see a staff member begin check-in.

  • Pick-up will take place promptly at 4pm in the same way.

  • If your camper will be carpooling with another student--or driving themselves--please bring a completed Drop Off/Pick Up Permission Slip.

Policy Items (And Good Advice!)

Phones and Tablets

  • Campers may bring a phone/tablet with them for LUNCHTIME ONLY ACCESS. If you send them with a device, please set the expectation accordingly. (Thanks!)

  • If you need to contact your camper during the camp day, please TEXT Instructor Angela Andrews or camp director Jason Richards. (Cameras may be rolling at any given moment: texts are best for non-emergencies!)

  • IN AN EMERGENCY...if you are not able to contact Angela or Jason, Spring Branch's landline is 757-333-7222. (We're praying this won't be an issue.)

What to Wear

  • Your Rich Theatre T-Shirt. You will receive one on Day 1.

  • Dress casually and modestly. Shorts should be a modest length. Jeans should not have tears in revealing places. If wearing something other than the Rich Theatre T-Shirt, messages need to be family friendly--if you'd be fine explaining its meaning to your 4-year-old, it works.

  • Wear closed-toed shoes. This is standard practice for all film sets. Sandals cause tripping and toe injuries, so unless they are part of a costume...nope.

  • Bring an extra layer. We will be in air-conditioning for at least the first three days. A sweatshirt or long-sleeve T-shirt is good to have on hand.

  • Don't wear your costume to camp. You may need to bring costume pieces from home. If you do, bring them in a bag and wear your 'regular' clothes. Plan to leave costume items on site until shooting ends on Day 6--and to take them off at lunch.

What to Bring

  • Small Notebook. One of those mini composition books is ideal. BONUS POINTS: arrive on the first day with 3 movie ideas and 3 film-making questions already entered.

  • Non-perishable bag lunch. Typically, we go nut-free for allergies. If this changes, we will let you know.

  • Snacks. Technically, these go in the bag lunch. But it never hurts to offer a reminder...

  • Water bottle with a cap. A 1-liter Nalgene bottle is great. Please bring something that can get knocked over without spilling.

  • An extra layer. Mentioned above, but it bears repeating.

  • Please DO NOT bring valuable items. Campers will be away from their belongings during shoot days. The building is a safe environment but, as a general rule, bring only what is required for the camp day.

Camp Structure*:

  • DAYS 1-2: The Two-Day Film School - Learning how films are made. Includes the following…

    • Three professionally led workshops:

      • Screen Acting

      • Cinematography

      • Screenwriting

    • Making short individual projects

    • Pre-production for a group project.

  • DAYS 3-6: Group Project Production - Film Campers become cast and crew of a short movie—which they design!

*Actual daily agenda is subject to adjustment to meet the needs of the project.

MOVIE SCREENING:

  • Friday, Apr 21, 6:00-8:00pm at Spring Branch Community Church.

  • Bring friends. Bring family. Bring popcorn... 'Cause we're watching the movie!
